Former Springbok assistant coach Gary Gold has thrown his support behind Agustin Pichot in his bid to become World Rugby chairman.
Pichot, 45, who is vice-chair of the global governing body, is running against Bill Beaumont for the top job after launching his surprise chairmanship bid hours before the deadline for candidates to declare their intention to stand in the election.
Bill Beaumont, the former England captain, has been World Rugby chairman since 2016.
Gold, who is a well-travelled coach and is currently in charge of the USA Eagles Test side, has joined Sir Clive Woodward in backing Pichot’s bid instead of Beaumont’s, saying the Argentine is a ‘strong leader who is not afraid to make tough calls’.
The election will take place at World Rugby’s at the annual meeting of council on 12 May.
