The Golden Lions Rugby Union will hold a hearing on Wednesday following an alleged incident of racial abuse in a club match between Wanderers and Roodepoort.
The incident occurred during an U21 match between the sides on 25 April.
At the time, Wanderers released a statement claiming that racial and verbal abuse was directed towards their players by Roodepoort spectators and players. They also claimed that Roodepoort players used the ‘K-word’ towards black players in their team.
Roodepoort launched an internal investigation and found that the claims against them could not be verified.
However, the GLRU has since confirmed its disciplinary committee will go ahead with a hearing scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 16 May.
‘After receiving statements from all parties involved, a decision was made to prosecute. An official disciplinary hearing will take place at Ellis Park. The alleged incident is viewed in a very serious light,’ Pieter Visser, the GLRU’s manager of amateur rugby, told Netwerk24.
Visser added that the case would likely not be solved within a few days as at least 13 witnesses have been called to testify at the hearing.
