Flyhalf Handre Pollard says the past 17 weeks have been the toughest, most intense and yet fun period of his Springbok career.
The Springboks spent the best part of the past four months in a bio-bubble in order to complete a schedule that included two Tests against Georgia, the three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions and six matches in the Rugby Championship in Australia.
During that long period, South Africa clinched a stirring Lions series win, but failed to retain the Rugby Championship title after consecutive defeats against Australia and one by the All Blacks.
The Boks were heavily criticised for their kick-orientated style of play, while Pollard in particular has been condemned for poor form in the past few Tests in the Championship.
Following Saturday’s win against the All Blacks in the final match of the tournament, the 27-year-old took to Instagram to express his views on the South Africa’s arduous journey in 2021, his gratitude for the support he received from everyone during the good and the bad times and conveyed his love for his teammates and the backroom staff.
“Probably the most intense, fun, tough and amazing 17 weeks for us as a team and personally in my career,” Pollard wrote.
“Thanks to everyone for their support through the good and the bad times. And to my teammates, you guys are just unbelievable people. Love you guys, but for now it’s back home to Montpellier for the Top 14. And of course my gorgeous wife Marise and my 2 little angels Rafa and Luna.”
