Crusaders boss Scott Robertson says his desire to work with the British & Irish Lions doesn’t necessarily have to be as an assistant coach.
Last month, Robertson confirmed that he reached out to Warren Gatland to express interest in forming part of the British & Irish Lions coaching group next year.
However, Sir Ian McGeechan has since warned that Gatland should think twice before bringing Robertson into the Lions’ coaching fold and should rather surround himself with homegrown (UK) coaching options.
McGeechan: Robertson doesn’t know northern players
Following McGeechan’s remarks, Robertson told New Zealand news outlet Stuff that he didn’t expect to take a primary assistant-coaching role at the expense of someone else.
‘I am happy to help Andy Farrell out with the defence, to have more of a specialised role to allow him to get the best out of the group,’ Robertson explained.
‘You need a hand. You’ve got Test matches, and mid-week games. Coaching staffs are big, they’ve got a lot of players on a Lions tour.’

Robertson also confirmed that he had not yet heard back from Gatland regarding his offer to help out the Lions.
‘Again, it was a chance for me to grow as a person and teach with people with different mindsets and skill sets and be in such a special group. Nothing has changed from that.
‘I’m just waiting to see. If I can help, that will be great.’
